Internet access is now a crucial necessity for all organizations.

But here's the thing: the quality and availability of internet services can vary a lot.

And even if you've got the right provider, your internet speed can still depend on various factors.Luckily, there are a ton of options out there for internet access, like fiber-optic connections, DSL, or cable broadband.

They can make a huge difference for your company without breaking the bank.

What are the types of Internet Access?

There are two main types of Internet access:

Shared Broadband
  • Shared Broadband is also known as contended Internet connections. This means that many different users share a single larger connection in a given area.
  • According to the OECD definition, broadband exists only when the down speed exceeds 256 kbps and there are no guarantees about the speed or quality of the connection.
  • The download speed is usually higher than the upload speed. This is asymmetric.
  • The usual overbooking ratio is 1:20-1:50. So what does this ratio mean? Suppose you have an Internet connection of 100 Mbit/s with a transfer ratio of 1:20 then the maximum speed is 100 Mbps and the guaranteed speed is 5 Mbps.
  • Some of the typical technologies used for broadband are xDSL, DOCSIS, FTTx, Wireless, and LTE.
Dedicated
  • On the other hand, dedicated Internet access is also known as non-contended Internet connection.
  • This means that the ISP dedicates a specific amount of bandwidth for a particular connection, and this bandwidth is not shared with anyone else. With a DIA connection, there is no overbooking on a line.
  • This type of connection is highly consistent and reliable, and the upload and download speeds are usually the same.
  • Some of the typical technologies used for dedicated Internet access are SDSL, SDH, Ethernet over Copper (EoC), Fiber and Radio.
